Room Dividers for home Office Space

Could a room divider screen be used in a home office area? Ofcourse! A room divider could be used literally anywhere in the house to break up large spaces, to provide privacy or simply as a decorative piece. Let’s see how a room divider screen could be used in a home office.
Living rooms serving as home office- If you work from home, you could have a home office with a computer, phone/fax, printer and other essential electronics included. If the place is a clutter and you don’t want visitors to comment about your organising methods, or if you would just like to work in privacy, place a room divider screen on one side of the office area, so that you would feel like working in a cubicle and it would create an office atmosphere. In fact in more and more offices, room dividers are replacing the boring cubicles.

Where could you Use a room Divider?

Gone are the days when room divider screens were solely considered to be utilitarian in nature; their main function being dividing a large space into smaller living spaces. Nowadays, interior designers and decorators are more and more using room divider screens to enhance the beauty of a room and make it look more appealing. These room dividers can be used almost anywhere in the home. Let us first look at a few instances where we could use a divider screen in the living area of a home.
Living room- If your living room is big and you don’t need so much space, place a room divider in the middle of your living room, to either divide the room into smaller areas or to provide privacy. They can also be placed against a wall for just decoration, or to hide a heater or cooling unit. Placing the room divider about a foot away from the wall would give you enough storage space to store something behind the screen maybe for just an evening when your friends drop in unexpectedly and you need to clear your baby’s toys in a hurry or in boxes for a longer time.

Room Dividers for Kids rooms.

When I was decorating my kids bedroom, I decided to use an old divider screen as a part of their room decoration and to use my interior designing experience to convert this simple screen into an attractive one. It was a plain white 3 panel screen with black edges. I gave my children (who were little at that time) some glossy, shining construction paper and told them to cut out beautiful shapes from it. They cut out stars, snow flakes, circles (some looking like squares!) and other odd looking ones. I selected the best among them and with their help, began to glue them on the divider screen in patterns. Then, I cut out some gold paper and stuck it around the divider screen, just inside the black edge. Voila, my ‘plain Jane’ room divider screen was looking like a fairytale princess room divider all shiny and beautiful. The best part of it was that it was mainly my kids’ handicraft and they felt so proud of it. After the first redesigning, my kids regularly show their handwork on this divider screen by taking away the earlier decoration and giving it a complete makeover with a different theme like race cars, huge posters, star wars themed pictures, their favorite Xbox game related pictures and so on. When there is a slight disagreement between the as to what the next theme would be, I tell them to decorate each side of the room divider according to their interests. Another advantage of having this room divider screen in their room is that since they show all their artwork on this room divider and not on the walls, their bedroom looks relatively new and clean!

Decorating a Plain Room Divider

A few years back, when I was living in a studio apartment of Washington DC, I happened to buy a room divider screen to add privacy and decor to my apartment. Since my budget was tight, I bought a relatively cheaper variety of room diivder costing lesser than $100. I put room divider in the middle of my living room /bedroom and folded it away when not needed. After a few years, when I bought my first home, among the list of items to be given away to charity, I included this divider screen also, since I felt that it would not suit the decor which I had decided for my home. But considering how useful the room divider had been during my stay at the studio, I found it difficult to part with the divider screen so I just stored it in my attic. Some time later, when I was decorating my kids bedroom, I decided to use this divider screen as a part of their room decoration and to use my interior designing experience to convert this simple screen into an attractive one. It was a plain white 3 panel screen with black edges. I gave my children (who were little at that time) some glossy, shining construction paper and told them to cut out beautiful shapes from it. They cut out stars, snow flakes, circles (some looking like squares!) and other odd looking ones. I selected the best among them and with their help, began to glue them on the divider screen in patterns. after the art project was complete, the ordinary looking room divider was transformed into an extraordinary looking room divider.

Functional Value of Room Dividers

Initially I thought all room dividers were very heavy, plain looking and very expensive for my tight budget. Then my friend showed me a few divider screens on a few websites and I was immediately hooked to that idea. Not only were there a variety of room divider screens in various materials like wood, metal, cloth etc, they were also available in different price ranges. There were light weight dividers which could be easily moved, foldable room dividers which could be used when wanted and stored away the rest of the time, heavy and tastefully handcrafted wooden dividers, oriental dividers, shoji room dividers and so much more. I purchased one room divider which was light weight, with 3 panels and fitting my budget.
That was my first room divider. From that time onwards, I have moved around a lot and presently live in my own home, but I have always included the room divider screens to be a part on my decorating ventures, whether it is for the living room, the bedroom, kids room or even outside on the backdeck, swimming pool area and so on. The room divider screen is the perfect solution for dividing a large room into smaller areas, adding privacy to a smaller living space or just for the purpose of decoration.

Room Dividers for Small Living Spaces

A few years back, I used to live in Washington DC in a studio apartment. A few months of the year , I needed to share this space with a room mate also. It was a really small space with a living and dining attached and a small kitchen. Even though I did not have much stuff, I was constantly looking for different ways to accommodate my meagre possessions. I also found it difficult to maintain some privacy especially when there was a room mate or when I had friends over. For the decorator inside me, this situation was a real nightmare. Moving to a bigger apartment was out of the question because of the high cost of apartments in the DC area. When I was literally going crazy trying to find a balance between maximum utilisation of the small space and adding privacy and a touch of decor to the place, my roommate suggested that I should buy a room divider screen to solve my problem. After a slight hesitation, I bought my first room divider. Till today I think that buying the room divider was one of the wisest investments I’ve ever made in my life. After that first room divider, I’ve bought many more dividers to add a decorative touch to my home.

Different Types of Room Dividers

If you are in the market to buy a room divider screen, you could have a difficult time deciding which type of screen to buy because there are so many varieties of room dividers available nowadays. Choosing a room divider will depend on its function and one’s taste.
Various types of room dividers include those made of wood, metal, glass, fabric etc, folding and non-folding and come with 2,3,4 or 5 panels. Small apartments would find a folding room divider to be very handy. Glass room dividers do not block light and can be used in offices or homes where light is needed. If a room divider also needs to satisfy one’s sense of decoration and design, tastefully carved wooden dividers can come in handy. These are made of different types of wood like birchwood, mahogany, bamboo etc and add new color and texture to your home. There are also screen dividers with gorgeous oil paintings which would add elegant decor to any room in which they are used.
So, whether one is old fashioned or modern, whether the use is for home or office, indoors or outdoors, whether the reason is space saving or privacy, there is always a room divider to appeal to everyone’s taste and needs.
